A Bite-Sized Interview with Candace Sams

by Donna Soluri

Take a moment to meet or perhaps reacquaint yourself with Book+Main author, Candace Sams. Her books, much like her life, are filled with magic and mythology. #fantasy #paranormalromance #action #adventure

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I am a night owl and have been for many years. I find writing paranormal subject matter is somehow easier at night.

What’s your favorite scent memory?

I love the smell of wood burning in a campfire. It reminds me of all things Autumn, which is my favorite season. My favorite memories have to do with loved ones and pets. Particularly those who have passed on.

Do you have a secret talent?

I don’t know if you’d call it a talent but, some years ago, I was sent to China as a martial arts ambassador – at the request of the US Senate. There were about 15 other people sent from the US and others joined in from around the world. We all toured Southern China and exchanged training techniques. I have three blackbelts.

Which song do you have on heavy rotation right now?

I can’t seem to get a tune from The Greatest Showman out of my head. It’s sung by Loren Allred – Never Enough.

If you could be anyone, alive, dead, or imaginary, for a day, who and why?

I would choose someone imaginary…someone magical like a fairy. I’d want to see the world through their eyes and find out what they’d think of ‘us’.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?

Never give up. I can’t tell you how many relatives told me this over and over. Mostly because we came from a very poor background and none of us ever expected we’d be able to pull ourselves out of it without an abundance of gumption.

What’s one change you had to make during the pandemic that you plan to keep when things get better?

I lost a great deal of weight and am now back down to ‘almost’ where I was when I trained with a professional trainer. I did this because the excess weight bothered me emotionally as well as being a physical issue that could get worse. That ‘burden’ is lifted now and I can focus on other things while staying in shape.

All-time favorite movie or TV show?

I guess, though there are so many, that I’d have to say that the very old Dark Shadows soap opera made a massive impression on me as a kid. It was so vastly different that there was no ignoring it for those times. It impacted an already born-in need to explore magic and other worlds. It’s one of the reasons I began to read everything I could get at the library; any subject having to do with all kinds of mythic creatures and the pantheons from which they came.

What is your favorite must have self-care item or ritual?

Gardening. As a Master Gardener, I find all kinds of peace by working outdoors. Some of my best writing ideas were born there.

Has your idea of success changed over the years, either professionally or personally?

Yes, certainly! Professionally, I quit trying to do what other authors told me was the ‘right’ thing regarding an author career. I watched so many authors fail by trying to follow outdated dogma that writing organizations regurgitated. It was old information passed on by big publishers who neither knew or cared about the readers’ desires. The most successful authors these days seem to have struck out on their own, to do their own thing in their own way. Personally, success now means contacting other, like-minded individuals who simply want to read books having to do with myth and magic. I could sit all day long and talk magic and folklore with folks who both love and understand the importance of such concepts in our lives. Without these subjects, the world would be a dull place indeed. These topics are fascinating and require a great deal of imagination. (Something all writers ‘must’ have). Success now means being able to write the things I love (myth and magic) without apologizing to anyone for doing so.

About The Craftsman

Release Date: February 12, 2021

As a member of an Order of mystic creatures who are hiding from mankind, Gawain O’Malley’s artwork is the main means of financial support.

Mankind moves closer to discovering the Order’s existence every year. It’s Gawain’s artwork that provides food, education, and medical support for all his beloved people including his own parents and siblings.

When someone not only destroys his art in a fire but causes him to lose his hand…in one night…revenge is all Gawain can think about. It consumes him to the exclusion of all else. Worse, he is certain that it was no human from the outside world who committed this act of horror.

That fire was set by a few calculating and hidden saboteurs from within the ranks of the Order.

Whoever these traitors are, they have not only taken away the biggest source of funding for his hidden society, but they have murdered their own kind in the process of stealing.

With limited resources and emotionally injured beyond belief, Gawain is forced to now create an entirely new inventory of magnificent art to sell. And he must do so in a very short time. Even as his will to create has been utterly destroyed.

But there is a cost to revenge.

Finding who started that fire and killed his friends is all that matters to Gawain. Even the love of a gentle and beautiful little brownie won’t get in his way.

In a tale of fantasy, theft, murder, mystery, intrigue, romance and suspense, there can be only one outcome. Revenge. And revenge is sweetest when delivered by the one person who can save all the magic that is left on Earth ─ The Craftsman.
