A Bite-Sized Interview with H.C. Bentley
by Donna Soluri
Getting to know authors is one of my favorite things, and having them answer some of my quirky Bite-Sized questions is like a delicious cherry on top! Take a moment to learn a little more about author H.C. Bentley. Her latest book, Feel the Heat is out now!
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Definitely a night owl. Mornings are nowhere near my prime time, as is evidenced by the fact my family backs away from me slowly until I’ve had my coffee!
What’s your favorite scent memory?
I’d have to say the smell of homemade biscuits and gravy. It’s such a southern answer, I know! I’m a southern girl, what can I say? Lol! But the smell of this brings back the memory of standing at the stove with my Mema in her kitchen — years ago, spoon in hand — as she’s teaching me how to make it from scratch. I can’t help but think of her every time I smell it (or make it).
Do you have a secret talent?
When the pandemic started, I got into making book nooks. I loved the challenge of scaling down objects to fit these tiny spaces. I’ve finished three and have a couple of others in progress. I like to think I got pretty good at it!
Which song do you have on heavy rotation right now?
Music is such a big part of my life that I don’t have any one particular song on rotation. I tend to have individual artists or genres on repeat. Most recently, it’s been Adele. I think I had her albums on repeat in my car for close to three weeks.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?
This one works on both the writer side and the personal: Do the thing you love that makes you happy, the thing that feeds your soul, because there will never be a time where absolutely everyone will love what you do.
What is one change you had to make during the pandemic that you plan to keep when things get better?
Is it sad to say my life didn’t change much during the pandemic? For the most part, I’m a homebody (though I do love the chance to travel when I can), so it’s been mostly my usual routine of work and home.
All-time favorite movie or TV show?
I can’t pick a favorite! I’m a TV/movie buff, so there are several. Television shows…I guess I’d say NCIS, Castle, The Rookie (can you tell I like cop shows? lol). Movies… I’m a Harry Potter nerd, love the Marvel series, and am always down for a good romcom.
Has your idea of success changed over the years, either professionally or personally?
It has. Going into publishing my first book — something I’d dreamed about since I was around twelve years old — I thought, “I’m going to sell this book and become this well-known author.” I guess that was my definition of success at the time. But the process of creating books, as many writers know, can be very humbling when we don’t become this overnight sensation. I’ve learned that if there are readers, even if it’s just a few, who are eagerly awaiting my next book, then that’s my success.
About Feel the Heat (The Bedfords #2)
Release Date: October 3, 2020
Firefighter Colt Bedford loves the job, even when the job almost kills him.
Two years later, the accident still haunts him. What began as nightmares starts to creep over into his waking moments. He’s done his best to hide it from everyone, including his family, but one particular incident during a rescue exposes his vulnerabilities, putting his job in jeopardy.
Single mother Amy Kincaid had lived a nightmare of her own. After escaping her abusive husband, she’s doing her best to raise her daughter on her own. Even though her ex is still making trouble for her, she’s focused on her daughter and getting from one day to the next, with no thought of inviting a man – any man – into her life. Amy’s world collides with Colt’s when the firefighter and his partner carry the mother and daughter from their burning home.
After the fire, a simple thank-you gesture from Amy turns into something neither of them had planned. Colt feels more for Amy than he has for any other woman before her, but after her failed marriage, Amy doesn’t trust her heart. When Amy’s ex-husband strikes again, putting their daughter’s life in danger, Colt and Amy have to decide: do they go their separate ways or do they go after everything they didn’t know they wanted?
There’s just something about a small town that makes relationships interesting, whether they are romances, long-running feuds, or life-long friendships. These are the relationships H.C. Bentley enjoys discovering and exploring. Well that, and the fact she just loves a good happily ever after or second chance story.
When she’s not writing, H.C. works as a cataloging librarian at her county library. In her spare time, you can find her playing pool, traveling with her family, or curled up watching movies (romantic comedies are a favorite!). She’s also an avid reader, leaning towards various authors of romance and chick lit, but her favorite is Nora Roberts.
A southern girl at heart, H.C. calls Kentucky her home. After opting to join the military to pay for college, she spent three years stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany before returning to her hometown in rural western Kentucky, where she and her husband live with their two daughters.
H.C. loves chatting with readers. You can contact her through the website, or any of her social media.
Donna should be an empty nester, but she’s not, thanks COVID-19. She’s a voracious reader of all books; she can’t pick just one sub-genre. A staunch supporter of seasoned romance and a lover of cupcakes, you’ll often find her with a cup of tea and a mountainous TBR pile close at hand. Follow her @DonnaSoluri on B+M Bites.
