THE BEST PLACE TO FIND ROMANCE NOVELS ONLINE

A Bite-Sized Interview with Jean Oram

by Donna Soluri

Today we are taking some time to get to know born and bred Canadian author, Jean Oram. She has several series out like Blueberry Springs, Veils and Vows, and The Summer Sisters. Her recently released The Cowboy’s Surprise Return is the fifth book in her The Cowboys of Sweetheart Creek, Texas series. The Cowboys of Sweetheart Creek is a #SmallTown and well, #Cowboy (duh!) themed series that is sure to leave you with a smile. Take a moment and get to know Jean Oram, then go read about some swoony cowboys like I did!

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

I can be both. But these days I am more of a morning person as I like the quiet of 6 AM and the feeling of having lots of time ahead of me in my day.

What’s your favorite scent memory?

I love the smell of rain and a fresh spring morning. Those are my all-time favourites.

I don’t like the smell of buckwheat honey or angry honeybees. (They do have a scent! I grew up on a honey farm — if you’re fearing I had some traumatic experience with bees! Being around them for years you learn their nuances.)

Do you have a secret talent?

If I told you, it wouldn’t be secret! (I can juggle as well as balance a spoon on the end of my nose.)

Which song do you have on heavy rotation right now?

I had Halo by Beyoncé on rotation a few months back. Right now I’ve been listening to nature tracks (birds and rain) with a white noise app to help me concentrate and chill out while writing and working on my business.

If you could be anyone, alive, dead, or imaginary, for a day, who and why?

I’d be a movie star. I think it would be neat to see what their lives and days are like while working on a movie.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?

Oh wow. So much advice…

Maybe: Don’t Panic! (From The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It’s really a one-size-fits-all bit of advice.)

Maybe: Forgive. (Yourself, your neighbours, your family, that rude person in the checkout line…)

Maybe: Leave room for serendipity. (I sometimes get so focused on a goal I forget to leave room for life and the unexpected to happen.)

Maybe: Not my circus, not my monkeys. (This has been my favourite lately as it reminds me not to take on other people’s problems or emotions. Plus, it makes me smile. It’s such a funny expression in that it immediately brings to mind an image of all these crazy monkeys being ridiculous. Why would I try to control monkeys! How silly!)

What’s one change you had to make during the pandemic that you plan to keep when things get better?

I got back into winter hiking as well as guided meditations rather than my own unfocused meditations.

All-time favorite movie or TV show?

Back to the Future is one we watched a TON when I was a teen. My brother and I still have most of the lines memorized. Needless to say, it’s really annoying watching the movie with us!

What is your favorite must have self-care item or ritual?

My morning routine. I get up, do a few minutes of yoga, feed the cat and dog while making a cup of tea, go back upstairs, journal, read a few pages from a book, go through my social media and email, look at my finances and vision board, mediate, shower, have breakfast and walk the dog among the local bunnies and deer. It’s a nice way to start the day!

Has your idea of success changed over the years, either professionally or personally?

Yes. It’s always changing. As I am able to achieve new levels that I once thought were out of reach, I aim for the next one. Sometimes I get lost in the goals, but often life reminds me that the reason I love my job of writing novels is threefold: it’s FUN, it gives me the flexibility to be there for my kids and husband, and getting to hang out with other readers. I used to be a librarian and readers are simply the best. I also get to hang out with writers who are also so much fun!
