A Match Made in (Book) Heaven
There are hundreds—no, thousands of words and phrases for friendship. Besties. BFFs. Bromance. Sister from another mister. And so on. But what about when your relationship—your friendship—was born from a love of books? Well then, you’re in a Bookmance. If it was in the dictionary, it would look a little something like this:
(Shoutout to Merriam Webster because I “borrowed” their format for dictionary entries. I love them.)
Look, I don’t know if anyone else is out here calling them Bookmances—Julie messaged me the other day, as she often does right at dinnertime, and used SHOUTY CAPS and exclamation points to share it with me. What I do know is that some of my closest, most important friendships exist because of BOOKS. Specifically, because romance books. Although, I do also have one friendship that began because of “a big-ass bomb,” but that’s perhaps a story for another time…
Getting back on topic, my Bookmances have brought me a lot of good over the years. I have literal shelves of signed paperbacks, many of which are the products of Bookmances. I’m currently wearing a necklace (this one) and a bracelet (like this) that were sent to me by women with whom I share a deep, unabiding Bookmance. Guys, this job of mine? Because of a Bookmance.
And my Bookmance with Julie is about to bring me, and hopefully you, all the more good. Quick backstory: I met Jules through an author group a few years ago (why yes, that example sentence about was factual). We bonded at first over one particular series, then branched into other things. The Great British Baking Show. Astrology, about which she knows all, and I ask endless questions. Our kids, who are of similar ages and experiencing similar angsts. Scottish TikTok. (If you haven’t experienced the joy of Scottish TikTok yet, you are missing out and we need to correct that ASAP.)
But you know what? The books are still a HUGE part of our Bookmance, which is why we plan to share with you a Bookmance Buddy Read on Stephanie Laurens’ Devil’s Bride. It’s a book we’ve both read and loved—she gifted it to me through Amazon when I first started reading Historical—and one we’ve now shared with Mary, who we are hoping will A) love the shit out of it and B) join us for our Buddy Read, because what’s better than one Bookmance? MULTIPLE BOOKMANCES.
And we’d like you to join ours. We’ll be here with our thoughts on Devil’s Bride on Wednesday, July 28 and all you need is a love of books, the desire to read about and talk about darkly devilish Dukes, and maybe a love of Scottish TikTok (optional).
See you then!
