Spooky Round-Up

Spooky Season is well and truly upon us—although there’s an argument to be made that the entirety of 2020 has been spooky—and the staff here at Book+Main wanted to get in the spirit of things with some recommendations. What follows is a round-up of spine-chillingly good reads that five of our romance-loving staff members think don’t suck and are just the thing to shift you into the right mood for the scariest time of year… (FTR, we are aware that the scariest thing about this post is the puns, but aren’t sorry for it either.)

Does anyone write an uber alpha male as well as Kristen Ashley? No. Therefore when she brought us Lucien—an alpha vampire—I was 110% sold. This is the first book in a trilogy and let me tell you—none of them disappoint. Vampires, shifters and the fate of the world in the balance? Yes, please. Until the Sun Falls from the Sky also has my other favorite Kristen Ashley character, Leah. She’s in her forties and an independent kind of girl. The push and pull between her and Lucien is too die for…pun intended.

The unique, gothic feel of this story set me afire with excitement! The ghost story is so intriguing and spooky, exceptionally well done. Alva and Sam, our main characters, explode off the page. Alva is a smart, fearless woman out to grab her second chance at life, as best she can. And Sam… oh, Sam. Sam is my favorite hero—he is a literal genius in all ways, far smarter than he should be, but it’s not pretentious. In fact, his self-awareness is a glorious attribute! Add that to the way he loves Alva and man, stick a fork in me, I’m done—he’s the one!

INCEPTION by Bianca Scardoni

I’m a fan of YA paranormal and this is exactly that. Character growth is essential for me to continue on with any series, and Bianca Scardoni did a great job in my opinion of showing that growth. It had a very Vampire Diaries meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer feel, and I’m always down for that! The twists and turns kept me flipping pages, and the ending had me wanting to throw my Kindle across the room. That’s a sign of a good book if you ask me!

THE BEAUTIFUL by Renee Ahdieh

This book is written with the most amazing details of the characters and the—it takes place in New Orleans, 1872. The vampires and demons in this book are humorously entertaining, as well as magically dangerous. Sebastian, current leader of La Cour des Lions, is dark and mysterious. Celene is infectious and has an amazing strength about her. All supporting characters, demon, vampire or human, add great depth to the story. Sebastian and Celene’s love story is not one to miss and takes place with mystery and murder all around them. Warning: cliff hanger!

BELLEFLEUR by Joyce Carol Oates

Years after reading this book, the windswept Bellefleur Manor conjured up by Joyce Carol Oates still arises in my memory. Still haunts me. It is the first book in Oates’ saga following the Bellefleur family, at the center of which is the love story of Gideon and Leah Bellefleur. Distant cousins, she from the poor side of the family, ravishingly beautiful and he the favored son of the wealthiest branch. Theirs is a story of love, passion, ambition, envy, and revenge that weaves in and out of the mirage of reality. A cursed family, a manor where spirits rove; an eerie wind that never quite dies down, a spooky tale indeed!
